Show control versus building automation

They look alike: both drive lights and devices from one system. But they are designed for opposite things, and you only notice when something goes wrong.

What they are built for

Home and building automation is designed for comfort and energy: heating, lighting, blinds, access. The questions are how warm it is, whether anyone is in the room and whether it is getting dark outside.

Show control is designed for the moment. The question is not whether the light should be on, but whether it should be on exactly now, exactly this bright, exactly together with the sound.

That difference in purpose runs through the entire design, which is why building automation in an experience is rarely a saving.

Difference one: the timescale

Building automation works in minutes. A lamp dimming a second late is comfortable behaviour, not a fault. Most systems deliberately use a slow fade, because it feels nicer.

Show control works in frames. A sound effect arriving half a second after the movement is no longer an effect, it is a fault the audience cannot name but does feel.

In practice: a building automation system that recalls a scene and takes one to three hundred milliseconds over it is fine for a living room and unusable for a dark ride.

Difference two: the home state

Building automation has nothing to return to. The current moment is the only state that counts, and tomorrow simply starts again.

Show control has to sit at exactly the same starting point after every group, every show and every power cut. Otherwise cue one no longer matches next time, and then it is not one show that goes wrong but every show after it.

That is more than recalling a list of levels: the system has to know in which order it may do so, what has to be safe first, and what to do when a component does not respond.

Difference three: what happens when something fails

If a sensor drops out in a building automation system, the light stays on or off. Annoying, not serious.

If a trigger drops out in an experience, the scene must not stall. So we continue on time when the trigger fails to arrive: the audience never sees the difference, and you see it in the log.

That is a design decision you make in advance, per cue. A building automation system cannot make it, because it has no concept of a show.

Difference four: the controls

Home automation apps are made for the resident: every device, every setting, everything adjustable. Precisely what you do not want in a venue.

The controls for an experience are made for the evening shift: one screen, big buttons, language that matches what happens in the room, and no settings that can be broken by accident. One button returns the room to how it should be.

When building automation is the right choice

For everything that is not an experience. Office lighting, heating, the blinds, access to the building: that is exactly what building automation is good at, and you should not put show control on it.

In many projects they sit side by side: building management runs the building, show control runs the room, and there is one link between them so the room knows when the building is open.

That is almost always the cheapest solution, because you use both systems for what they were made for.

The short rule of thumb

If it has to be comfortable, it is building automation. If it has to happen at the right moment, it is show control.

Unsure? Ask yourself one question: if this happens half a second late, will a visitor notice? If the answer is yes, you need show control.

Can I run my escape room on home automation?

For the light in the waiting area, fine. For the room itself, no: building automation has no home state to return to after every group, and a response time of hundreds of milliseconds is noticeable the moment a puzzle has to trigger something.

Yes, and that is usually the cheapest setup. Building management runs the building, show control runs the room, and one link makes sure the room knows when the building opens and closes.

Is show control more expensive than building automation?

Per driven point often yes, because industrial components and a safety assessment come with it. Per project it is less dramatic, because you only apply show control to the room and the rest of the building stays on building automation.
